Twitter is limiting how many tweets per day various accounts can read, according to a post by Executive Chair Elon Musk. The goal of this restriction is to discourage “extreme levels” of data scraping and system manipulation. Verified accounts were initially allowed to read up to 6,000 posts a day, while unverified accounts had a limit of 600 posts a day. New unverified accounts were further restricted to 300 posts a day. However, Musk later announced an increase in the temporary reading limitations. Verified users can now read up to 10,000 posts per day, unverified users have a limit of 1,000 posts per day, and new unverified users are allowed to read 500 posts per day. Despite the lack of detailed information, these measures reflect Twitter’s commitment to combatting data scraping and system manipulation.

This decision  is a response to the growing concern over aggressive data scraping practices that have impacted user experience. Elon Musk specifically highlighted the negative impact of such practices on Twitter’s platform. By imposing limitations on the number of tweets that can be read in a day,  hopes to discourage organizations from engaging in these aggressive data scraping techniques. This move aims to protect the user experience and ensure the smooth functioning of the social media platform.

It is important to note that these reading limitations are temporary emergency measures. Twitter’s recent decision to require users to have an account to view tweets also falls under this category. While these measures may inconvenience some users, they are necessary steps to address the issues caused by data scraping and system manipulation. Twitter is actively working on more permanent solutions to mitigate these problems and restore a seamless user experience.

The implementation of these reading limitations has not been without its challenges. On a recent Saturday morning, Twitter experienced a significant outage, with thousands of users reporting difficulties accessing the app. At its peak, around 11:17 AM ET, nearly 7,500 users encountered issues. While such disruptions are unfortunate, they underscore the importance of implementing measures to combat excessive data scraping and system manipulation. Acknowledges the inconvenience caused by these limitations and remains committed to delivering an optimal user experience to its global community.

Under Elon Musk’s ownership, Twitter has taken steps to attract advertisers and boost subscription revenue. One such initiative is the inclusion of verification check marks as part of the Twitter Blue program. This move aims to provide advertisers with a more reliable and trustworthy platform to engage with their target audience. By winning back advertisers who may have left the platform, aims to enhance its revenue streams and ensure a sustainable business model.

Elon Musk has also expressed displeasure with the usage of Twitter’s data by artificial intelligence firms like OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT. He criticized these firms for extensively relying on Twitter’s data to train their large language models. While the debate surrounding data usage continues, Twitter is committed to safeguarding the privacy and data integrity of its users. The company is actively exploring ways to strike a balance between data usage and user protection.

In conclusion, Twitter’s decision to limit the number of tweets users can read per day is a proactive step to discourage excessive data scraping and system manipulation. Despite the temporary inconvenience caused by these measures, they demonstrate Twitter’s commitment to maintaining a platform that prioritizes user experience and data integrity. By imposing these limitations, Twitter aims to create a more balanced environment and ensure the longevity and sustainability of its social media network.

With these new limitations in place, Twitter aims to strike a delicate balance between providing users with access to valuable tweets and preventing the misuse of its platform. By setting different thresholds for verified and unverified accounts, Twitter seeks to maintain a fair and controlled environment for its user base. These measures not only discourage excessive tweet data scraping and manipulation but also contribute to the overall improvement of user experience. Twitter’s commitment to addressing these issues underscores its dedication to creating a safe and engaging social media space where tweets can be shared and enjoyed by all.
